Tea Sparrow Tea Box Review + Promo Code

April 25, 2014
I first learned about Tea Sparrow from guest blogger Py who attended EAT! Vancouver 2013. It is a tea tasting club that sends its subscribers 4 different loose leaf teas a month for a monthly fee of $20 (tax and shipping inclusive). There are also options for a one-time purchase ($25) or three/six month subscriptions ($22/$20 per month). All of the teas are free of artificial ingredients and are obtained from tea blenders around the world. For readers who are interested, you can now take advantage of a special promotion on Tea Sparrow's website with the promo code teas. This promotion will give you your first tea box for only $8 (60% off!).

I recently received a sample tea box from Tea Sparrow to review, and I was quite excited because unlike Py the coffee lover, I drink tea daily and like to try new blends. The package arrived in a flat little brown box.

A colourful little card inside gave a short introduction of Tea Sparrow and offered brewing tips in the back.

The 4 teas featured last month were Rooibos Du Hammam, White Tea Champagne, Cacao Tea, and Organic Masala Chai. Each bag contained about 1 oz (~28 grams) of tea. From my experience, each bag offered just enough for around 5 pots of tea using a 16 oz teapot. So the whole tea box was good for 20 pots of tea.

Rooibos Du Hammam (herbal)
I'm normally not a fan of rooibos, but I find that this is a nice option when I want a light, non-caffeinated drink. The cup is bright red and very fruity with strong berry notes.

White Tea Champagne (caffeinated)
According to Tea Sparrow, this delicate white tea is a popular choice among its members. Personally I thought this was the most generic blend, and the number of ingredients mixed in with the tea really detracted from the clean taste of the tea leaves. Also I did not enjoy the strong champagne notes.

Cacao Tea (herbal)
Cacao tea was the most unique option in the box, composed only of organic cacao bean shells. It was like a very light and crisp hot chocolate minus the creaminess. The instructions recommended adding milk and honey, but I preferred it plain for a stronger cacao flavour.

Organic Masala Chai (caffeinated)
The masala chai was my favourite because all of the ingredients blended together perfectly. A rich Chinese black tea was combined with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper, and cloves to create a deep spiciness that warms the stomach. It also makes for a wonderfully aromatic milk tea.

The best part about the Tea Sparrow tea box is being able to experience a variety of teas that I might otherwise never consider trying. And if I discover a tea I really enjoy, I can order it directly from the individual tea blender clearly labelled on the bag. I would definitely recommend giving Tea Sparrow a try for just $8 the first month.
