Aoyama Cafe

November 18, 2011
I've wanted to try this place ever since it opened, but never got around to it because of the relatively high prices. Located on the first floor of Aberdeen, Aoyama faces a lot of competition from cheaper and tastier Asian restaurants as well as the large food court with a huge variety of selection. One advantage of eating here is the clean and comfortable seating area with simple but modern decor. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offer a view of the street on one side and a view of the water fountain on the other.

I originally wanted to try the rice pizza, but ended up getting a yakiniku rice plate ($10.95) instead. I loved the light mayo sauce, but overall this was a very common and average dish. The meat was tender, but I found it strange that it was served with raw greens.

I saw pictures of the French toast taped outside the restaurant and it looked really appealing. I opted for the apple French toast ($8.95) which came with caramel apple slices and applesauce. The bread cubes were dusted with cinnamon and icing sugar. The texture was hard and crispy as the bread was overcooked — so hard, in fact, that it scratched the inside of my mouth. It tasted alright, but that didn't compensate for the texture. I also found it too pricey considering it was just bread.

Service was not bad for an Asian restaurant. I was especially impressed that the server gave us hot water instead of the usual iced water. I prefer hot drinks, especially when it's freezing cold outside. But given the high prices for not-so-great food, I doubt I'll be back unless there's a discount. For those of you who are interested in trying this place out, it's regularly featured on Groupon Now, so keep an eye out for it.

  1. I think Aoyama is overpriced too! However, some of their stuff is not bad like their casserole with the cheese baked on top and their "cod roe and squid" spaghetti. I get that all the time! Recently I used the "Now deal" Groupon to get $20 worth of food for $10. I was so happy! :D

I'm excited for the get together with you and Janice! Keep me posted! :D

  2. @Kirby: Yes Groupon Now offers an awesome discount, but I think Aoyama is only featured on weekdays (Tue-Thu I suspect...).

I just contacted Janice and gave her our emails, so I guess we just have to wait for her response now :)

  3. It IS overpriced (a bit). The daily specials are so restrictive since you have to order from that section of the menu. It actually ends up to be around the same anyways, though I fell for it once :(

  4. @Janice: Yea! The specials are not really that cheap. Sure they have nice presentation, but the quality of food is not worth the price. It's one of those places you'd like to try at least once because it looks so appealing and they offer gimmicky items like rice pizza. But I wouldn't go without Groupon Now.
