Shanghai Ting 上海亭

UPDATE: Shanghai Ting is currently under new management. Based on both my experience and what I've heard from others, the food quality has deteriorated significantly and the prices have been increased. So the comments in the following review no longer apply.

Shanghai Ting is truly a hidden gem in the heart of Richmond. It's located in the Empire Centre food court, a small place with lots of options.

The most famous dish here is the xiao long bao ($3.50). People come here just for this because of the great value. You get 6 for only $3.50 while most restaurants would charge at least $5 for the same portion. They were extremely juicy with lots of soup inside and I think they tasted even better than the ones from Shanghai River and Shanghai Wonderful.

The sour and spicy soup ($3.50) was also very good, probably one of the best I've had in Vancouver. There were tender bits of pork, smooth chunks of soft tofu, with just a dash of spice and vinegar.

The shepherd's purse and pork dumpling ($5.50) is another famous Shanghainese dim sum. We got 10 dumplings in a clear broth with dried shrimp and green onions.

The food tasted great and was very good value for the price. The only downside was the food court setting with uncomfortable seating and plastic bowls and utensils. But for the sake of good food, that shouldn't be much of a problem.

  1. Glad you liked it! It's one of my go-to places too!!! The chef was formerly the dim-sum chef at a famous hotel in Shanghai.
