Pearl Castle 圓香 (Sexsmith)

December 04, 2011
I've been to Pearl Castle many times, but it wasn't until my coworkers suggested having lunch there that I realized I hadn't been back since I started blogging. Although I wasn't excited about going there yet again, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to write a post for this popular bubble tea place. The 3 of us decided to get 2 entrees and an appetizer to share. We got the fried chicken nuggets with noodle soup (鹽酥雞湯麵) ($7.75), but the chicken nuggets were not comparable to the ones at Beefy Beef Noodle. They were a bit dry and the meat inside was not very tender.

The Taiwanese style egg roll (台式蔥花蛋餅) ($4.50) came with 2 long streaks of sauces on either side. One was a garlic sauce and the other was slightly sweet. The pancake was very thin with a nice thick layer of egg rolled up inside. Although the pancake itself was not very savoury or tasty, the egg and the sauces made up for it.

My coworkers are both spicy lovers, so they opted for the Szechuan style boiled fish cutlets (香辣水煮魚) ($8.25). It was a hot pot served with rice, a few side dishes and a grass jelly dessert. The pot of soup was extremely spicy (for my poor spicy-intolerant tongue), and even my coworkers commented that they found it quite spicy. That would not have been so bad if there were some tasty flavours to complement the hotness, but unfortunately the hotness was very one-dimensional. The tofu side dish was good, but I don't think raw lettuce went well with the theme. I enjoyed the grass jelly with sweet beans hidden underneath because it was particularly soothing after the spiciness.

Pearl Castle is a decent Taiwanese restaurant with pretty good bubble tea. (I didn't have drinks this time, but I have on many other occasions.) But at the same time, I don't find it an exciting place to visit. It's a good option if you're looking for a place to fill your stomach with Taiwanese food though.
